Reception Planning

Following your ceremony, many choose to have a gathering of their family and friends.
The reception is a time for your loved ones and others to accept you as a married couple for the first time.
Sometimes the families of the newly married have not met before, so it can be an important event.
Step Three:  Reception
The Celebration!

After the ceremony, many people choose to have a celebration during which the couple "receives" their guests.  This allows time for their guests to congratulate them, and the couple to thank family and friends for their well wishes.

  • Do you want to hold a reception?
  • If you do, would you want it held immediately following your ceremony?
  • In the event of a destination wedding or elopement, will you have a reception upon your return?
  • Where will it be held?
  • Who will you invite?  Will you invite children?
  • Do you want it to carry the same type of formality or theme as the wedding?
  • Do you want music, dancing, traditions such as chair dances, father-bride or mother-groom dances?
  • What type of food or beverages will you serve (if any)?
  • Will you serve alcohol?  Who will pay for it?

The reception is usually one of the biggest expenses of the wedding or renewal event.  Want to save money?  Get married on a weekday or during a slower time of the year when many hotels, restaurants and reception halls offer discounted rates (summer months tend to be the busiest); have your reception during mid-morning or mid-afternoon so you feel less obligated to serve a full meal; if you have a lot of musical friends, ask them to bring their instruments and have a revolving jam band.

I can offer suggestions from what I've seen others do successfully, and referrals to quality vendors, musicians, photographers, videographers, etc.
